Hello from East Africa!
My incredible journey with Micato Safaris and fellow travel advisors is still underway (still to come: the Mara, Loisaba, and Amboseli in Kenya!), but I couldn’t wait to share highlights from my journey so far. From meaningful encounters in Nairobi to the breathtaking beauty of Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, every moment has been unforgettable.
Before heading to Tanzania, we visited the Sheldrick Trust Elephant Orphanage. It was an emotional and inspiring experience getting to meet the baby elephant “adopted” by our family when Steph and Madelyn visited in 2023 (pictured). We learned about the incredible care that goes into tending to these rescued elephants and the fascinating, hard work involved in rehabilitating and reintroducing them into the wild. Interacting with the baby elephants and seeing where they sleep gave us a heartfelt glimpse into this extraordinary mission.
Thanks to recent rains, the the fabled “lost world” of the Ngorongoro Crater was lush and alive with wildlife. Flamingos painted the water’s edge pink, contrasting with zebras, hippos, wildebeests, many beautiful birds I hadn't seen before, and playful pumbas (warthogs) with their adorable babies. A rainbow stretching across the crater at the end of the day made for an unforgettable moment.
The Serengeti offered wonders at every turn. We were fortunate to catch the tail end of the Great Migration in the central Serengeti—a spectacular sight as wildebeest and zebras moved across the plains. Herds stretched as far as the eye could see, with thousands of zebras, buffalo, giraffes, and gazelles. The abundance of baby animals and expectant mothers melted my heart! Seeing cheetahs for the first time was an absolute highlight and spotting a pride of lions relaxing on a massive rock formation felt like stepping into The Lion King 🦁
